Meet Angela

Hi, my name is Angela Liu! I’m a new Student Writer for I’m Not Fine. I’m a rising junior from New York City and I have an interest in psychology, social work, as well as pediatrics. One of my biggest goals is to travel to at least 20 different countries throughout my lifetime! My hobbies include crocheting, writing, playing the violin, journaling, and hanging out with animals (especially cats!).

My Story

I’ve struggled with depression and self-harm for the past 5 years. For the longest time, I suffered alone, and I thought that I’d never get through life. Throughout this time span, I’ve managed to find and build a support system with people who I trust and value and I’ve learned that- help really is out there. My relationship with healthcare professionals such as therapists and social workers was what led me to be inspired in pursuing a place within this industry in the first place.

I know that mental health struggles are heavily stigmatized, especially within underserved and minority communities. As an East Asian myself, the traditional standards that my parents held me against conflicted with my interests in healing and getting better. The problem was that they would not recognize my problems as one worth discussing. In many people’s eyes, mental illness either equates to insanity or is deemed invalid. But I would like everyone to know that it’s okay to not be fine, and it’s normal to feel this way. Struggling is a part of the process. You’re not deranged or “wrong” or “defected.”

I’m so excited to be a part of I’m Not Fine’s mission in creating a safe space for minority girls! Destigmatizing mental health is something that I find crucial, especially in the society that we live in today with social media and influencers portraying “ideal” and “flawless” lifestyles. I hope that you all will enjoy my content in the future!
